Campbell Brown Questions McCain Spokesman. Spokesman Says: “Uhhhhhh….”

John McCain was set to be interviewed by CNN’s Larry King but then yesterday, CNN’s Campbell Brown asked very reasonable questions of McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds and Bounds was, erm….unprepared. So McCain canceled his interview. According to the New York Times and CNN, this interview was the reason McCain canceled.

Some Debate Thoughts

Hilary Clinton: For fuck’s sake, Hilary, admit it! You. Were. Wrong. You know what real adults do when they fuck up? They admit it and move on. Everyone on the left thinks you were wrong in voting for the war and many republicans do, too, so just admit it, so we can get on with things.
Wolf Blitzer: Please don’t ever moderate a debate again. Your questions were largely facile, you interrupted candidates far too often and the hand-raising thing is just silly.
CNN and the Democratic Party: While there was a big “to do” made about the democratic party refusing to enter into a debate that was to be held on Fox News because it’s not exactly “fair and balanced,” what on EARTH made you think the Manchester Union Leader was a good alternative? That newspaper makes the New York Post look like The Nation!
Senator John Edwards: You want to “re-establish America’s moral authority in the world?” Are you kidding me? So you really think that even before “W” lost us whatever credibility we still had, we had moral authority in the world? That statement is just too ridiculous for me to get into, so I’ll just say mention a few of our “moral superiorities”: Guatemala 1954, Dominican Republic 1965, Chile 1973, Vietnam and Watergate.
Senator Dodd: I’m not your biggest fan, but BRAVO for getting the last word in about reinstating the constitution after W and his thugs shredded it. Good luck to you or the eventual winner.

CNN International – Offensive Ghouls

I used to turn to CNN International as an almost BBC-like respite from the mostly conservative, blandness of major US news services, but no more.
CNN are an offensive bunch of ghouls.
I just got home and was shocked and offended to see CNN glorifying the illness of Fidel Castro. When changing from 12:00am EDT program to the 1:00am hour, CNN Internationals anchors said something like: “We leave you now with scenes from Miami where they are celebrating the news about Fidel Castro” and they showed a jubilant crowd in Miami, dancing and singing. SHAME on them! Politics aside, celebrating the illness of such an important world figure is pretty disturbing and highly unprofessional.
Would they show a group of Muslims celebrating a Pope’s illness? Would they “wrap out” of a segment on the downturn in the health of Ariel Sharon with scenes of a Palestinian party? I think not. Showcasing a group of fundamentalists being happy because of the illness of someone they oppose is just sick.

A Katrina Note: Race And TV News

Earlier today, CNN‘s Wolf Blitzer was wrapping up a segment in which he had interviewed former presidents Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush about what they were doing for the relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Blitzer mentioned something I had not seen anyone on a major news outlet point out. While speaking over footage of New Orleans residents waiting so futilely to be rescued, Blitzer commented how those left in New Orleans were: “so poor and so black.”
I might not have gotten the quote exactly right, but the sentiment is still there. I’m very happy Blitzer made the comment but the fact that it’s so notable, 3 days into this tragedy, is telling. We are going to miss Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw and Dan Rather for a very long time.

Nation Editor Katrina vaden Heuvel Praises Costas

katrina_vanden_heuvel.jpgCostas.jpgAs were many of us who watched Bob Costas filling in on CNN‘s Larry King Live following President Bush’s speech on June 28th, Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor of The Nation, was impressed. Costas wasted no time in getting straight to the point. In his third question for Senator John Kerry he asked a question many of us on the Left have been asking for months, to wit:
