Deal Reached On Judicial Nominees; “Nuclear” Option Avoided

Several news services have reported that the US Senate has reached a deal on judicial nominees, avoiding a showdown vote on use of the filibuster that was expected to come tomorrow morning when the Senate was scheduled to vote on judge Pricilla Owens’ confirmation. A press conference is expected shortly.

All that remains is waiting to see which of President Bush’s right wing toady judges gets approved.

With the Senate and House moving to deal President Bush several setbacks in the coming days and weeks over the John Bolton nomination and stem cell research, my theory is that the GOP, who had so far refused to make any kind of compromise, was afraid of losing the filibuster and Bolton fights when they’re on the verge of dealing Bush a blow by passing sweeping stem cell research bills in both the House and Senate.
