While I am getting ready to immerse myself in Rotterdam and Berlin for lllllllllllllll [GODDAMMIT! My fucking "L" key has come loose and it's making me fucking nuts! Please excuse any extra L's you might see in my copy.] Anyway, as I was saying, while I used to be a regular at the disturbingly effective mixture of fantastic indie film, hype, commerce and bimbo trust fund whores that is the Sundance Film Festival, I have, at least for the time being, abandoned Park City. However, many other fine journalists of varying experience and style are at this very second explaining to the doorman at Zoom that they really are on the list for the Cinetic Media party and that John Sloss would be very angry indeed, should he hear of their mistreatment.
Actually, while this kind of a snafu (Situation Normal, All Fucked Up…I bet you never knew that’s what “snafu” meant, did you?) happens all the time, most of the people I am about to mention could really give a rat’s ass about most of the parties in Park City. They’re too fucking tired, although there is always that party, you know? The one that you happen on to by mistake or worse, miss completely and find out that it was SO much better than the boring wankfest for Tom DiCillo‘s latest….erm….wankfest.
Anyway, when you’re done scratching your head trying to figure out what the fuck I am on about, why not check out some of the following outlets and bloggers to see what’s really happening in Utah?
indieWIRE – I often say I think of iW as my baby, just one I no longer have custody of. I won’t pretend that I don’t miss those heady days of no sleep and guerilla reportage and it’s still the first place I look to for indiefilm news and no one covers Sundance like Eugene, Brian, James and the gang. While they aren’t doing a print edition this year, they can still bask in the glow that they (me, too!) pioneered the concept of print dailies at Sundance, way back in the days when we were affectionately known as “the school paper.” Yeah, the school paper that repeatedly scooped the so-called major Hollywood trades, yo! Put that one in your brand new, Rotterdam-bought hash pipe and smoke it, bitch!
Anthony Kaufman – it’s kind of funny. I used to be Tony’s boss at indieWIRE and he’s younger than me, but I’ll be the first to say he’s kicking my butt up and down the page as a serious film journalist. Not that I’m all that serious, mind you, but you get the pernt. Tony’s kind of like your curmudgeonly old uncle who’s actually not very old but just acts like it, from time to time. He’s been going to Sundance almost as long as me and since I haven’t been there in 5 years, he’s probably spent more time there than I have and certainly takes the business more seriously than I do or at least his reportage takes it more seriously than mine usually does. That’s ok, though. It’s good stuff.
Tom Hall – Tom’s my hero. A brilliant writer and genuine lover of all things cinema. He’s never happier than when he’s in the dark of a movie theater with the possible exception of when he’s in a pub, pint in hand, watching our beloved Reds
achieve glory on the football pitch.
Cinematical – Ah, the former employer! What to say? I can’t call Karina Longworth my protégé, exactlyll. She was an accomplished writer before I recommended her for the job of my co-blogger at Cinematical and to be honest, I wasn’t there long enough to have mentored her (not that she needed it). That said, I’d like to think I had a little bit to do with her meteoric rise into the blogosphere and I still think she’s wrong about Sideways.
